Weapons Stun Tribes

Locals have been shocked by the weapons of newly-arrived Roman soldiers.

The Romans are building a fort this year (48 AD) in the area where the Coritani tribe live. They have called it Ratae Coritanorum and there are plans to make it into a very big place.

The grand appearance of the soldiers as they arrived is likely to have made a big impression on local people.

Locals believe that a big reason for the success of the Roman army is its powerful weapons which can fling sharp and heavy objects great distances.

Each soldier also has his own practical basic equipment.

The sword is very important. It is light and short, only about 45cms, so soldiers can use it for stabbing quickly.

A soldier carries two spears to throw at the enemy. The spears are just over two metres long and they are designed to bend and stick in the enemy's shield so he cannot use it to protect himself. They are difficult to pull out and will bend on impact, so they cannot be thrown back at the attacking Roman soldiers.
